My inspiration to prepare essences in Alaska began with an awareness of the vibrational purity of this land. Alaska is one of the very few places left on our planet where the environment is much as it was thousands of years ago. Less than 630,000 people live in an area one-fifth the size of the continental United States, and over half of these are clustered in the three largest cities. The plant and elemental kingdoms here are still intact, healthy, and exuberant because much of the state has never been impacted by human activity.

All of the life forms here have had to develop special adaptations to ensure their chances for survival in an extreme climate characterized by constant movement and change. As we begin a new century and a new millennium, the skills and abilities that enable us to thrive in an environment of continual change and transformation are becoming increasingly relevant. These qualities are embodied by the Alaskan essences. Through the study and use of them, we can awaken and master these charasteristics in ourselves.

Essences Based on Alaska's Unique Environment

The preparation of an environmental essence begins with identification of specific elemental qualities in the environment that we wish to enter into a co-creative healing agreement with. We then extend an attunement from our hearts to the devic and elemental beings that represent these qualities. Through this attunement we communicate our love and blessings, and ask that the energies we have identified be transferred into the bowl of water that we have prepared. We accept the essence gratefully as the environment responds. The resulting essence is totally unique, as the vibrational qualities it contains can never be duplicated in exactly the same way. Below are some of our special environmental essences based on light.

Full Moon Reflection: This essence was made on a cold, clear, full moon night, in a canyon overlooking Kachemak Bay, near Homer, Alaska. It is an essence of reflected light -- the sun's light reflected by the full moon off the water of Kachemak Bay and into the snow-filled canyon. It penetrates deep into the subconscious to bring forth that which lies unresolved beneath the surface. We are offered an opportunity to let our shadow-self be illuminated by the light of our conscious awareness. This essence helps us become aware of the energy we unconsciously project into the shared dynamics of our relationships. Along with this awareness, it gives us the strength to take these projections back and process the issues they represent in an honest way, so that our relationship dynamics can remain clear.

Northern Lights: This essence was made on a windy subzero arctic night under a swirling green display of Northern Lights. Its healing focus is to support deep levels of reintegration in the heart, especially after a traumatic or transformative experience which has broken down the old ways we have used to relate to others and to the outside world. This can leave us feeling disoriented, and with our heart forces scattered. In such cases, Northern Lights can be used to cleanse and prepare the heart for the creation of a new matrix of connection with others based on Universal Love.

Solar Eclipse: This essence balances and harmonizes the feminine and masculine energies in men and women and promotes the conscious empowerment of the inner male. Solar Eclipse is helpful when a child was raised by a dominant mother, either because the father was absent, or she was unwilling to share this responsibility with him. In such cases, the essence will help the individual break free from the influence of the mother and learn to develop his or her own masculine qualities, with the help of the fortifying energy of the Sun.

Solstice Sun: This essence was prepared on the "night" of June 21/22, as the midnight sun danced along the peaks of the Brooks Range in the northern interior of Alaska. Solstice Sun catalyzes our ability to access and circulate a stronger current of light energy throughout the physical body, and is therefore helpful for anyone experiencing light deprivation. It can also be used to open the heart and the energy pathways of the body in preparation for a "peak" experience, and will help a person integrate such an experience after it has taken place.

Uses of The Alaskan Environmental Essences

When taken internally, these essences stimulate and support change and transformation at the most basic elemental level of the energy system. They are very catalytic in their actions and are often indicated when a strong, cleansing energy is needed to awaken or bring vitality to someone who is not responding to other therapies or modalities. They also provide a strong base of support for our healing work with flower essences, lending energy and vitality to the healing processes catalyzed by the flowers.

The Alaskan Environmental essences are also very effective tools for Space Clearing. This process involves cleansing and releasing old energies from our living and working environments, and then recharging and revitalizing these spaces with fresh, clean energy from nature. Space Clearing with environmental essences is an especially useful process for those living in crowded and polluted urban areas, where the natural elemental forces have been weakened or dissipated altogether.

Environmental essences can also be used to provide balance and stability for those involved in emergency situations such as natural disasters, where the environment itself is in transition.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Steve Johnson is the owner and director of the Alaskan Flower Essence Project, which he co-founded in 1984. He began preparing and researching the Alaskan flower essences 23 years ago in the summer of 1983. The following year he pioneered the concept of preparing essences directly from the environment, and in 1985 began making gem elixirs. Steve has 22 years of experience as a flower essence therapist, and has a busy practice seeing clients in the United States and the UK. He has also been certified as a Practitioner of Interior Alignment, Instinctive Feng Shui, and Space Clearing by Denise Linn, and is pioneering a new style of Space Clearing using the Alaskan Essences.
