Nature Talks Through Beauty

Two years ago, the Spirituality in Healthcare Network in Toronto invited me to share my work with flower essences. Instead of ‘talking about’ the process of creating essences, a delicious, intimate experience that I consider contemporary alchemy, I created a beautiful slideshow to lead the audience into a virtual garden.

hydrangea2They were mesmerized with the beauty of the images, for flowers always speak directly to the human heart. Though they wanted to understand the healing properties of the essences, it was the flowers themselves that elicited a deeper heart response and visceral connection. The images helped them remember what they already knew — beauty is powerful. It heals, uplifts,
and inspires.

Rethinking Positive Affirmations

Posted by admin on Aug 21, 2010

By Deborah Bier, PhD, Publisher and Editor of Vibration and maker of the Whole Energy Essences

As we move through life’s challenges, it’s important to give encouragement and affirmation to both ourselves and others.  A popular method is to use affirmations, positive statements to help create positive outcomes.  Many essence practitioners use this extensively, adding affirmation to the essence-taking process. This is often done at the moment an essence is taken to help the user orient themselves on their goals.

20297755.thbHowever, I’ve always been a bit standoffish about the use of positive affirmations.  For some reason, they have always seemed to me like convincing myself or others of something, rather than working towards the desired outcome. While I’m all over having an optimistic point of view every day, reciting affirmations just doesn’t somehow cut it for me… nor has it for many of my patients/clients. The whole thing is often accompanied by a lot of “if you’re not talking positive all the time, you’re messing up your life,” kind of trash talk… hardly positive, but that’s part of the baggage the practice of positive affirmations all too often drags along.

It turns out recent research shows that using affirmative statements to help create positive outcomes is not as effective as many might hope. There is a better way to create the results we’d like, and that is to form the desired outcome into a question. Using the same example as above, “Will I have a great day today?” would be a way to use this technique. I think it would be important to encourage asking such questions in a state of open curiosity, not fearfulness.

The Illusion of Living Within Your Comfort Zone

Posted by admin on Jul 17, 2010

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Neale Donald Walsch

How often do you use the terms “comfortable” and “comfort zone,” either inwardly or out loud? How frequently do you hear them used by others? To my ears it seems to be a constant litany wherever I go.

“Oh, I couldn’t talk about how much it means to me… speaking up is just not in my comfort zone.” “Go after that big life change? Not yet — not until it’s in my comfort zone.” “I’m not comfortable with what you want from me, so I’m going to say ‘no’.”

30892398.thbWho said we were supposed to be so comfortable all the time? In the American culture I’ve been in my entire life, we seem to be stuck in the idea that living “comfortably” or “within one’s comfort zone” is some kind of right we have been granted by the Divine.  And to be pushed out of — or, heaven forbid, decide on our own to leave — our cozy sense of comfort is some kind of horrendous personal assault. It’s as if our Declaration of Independence said back in 1776:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created comfortable; that they are endowed by their Creator with inherent and inalienable rights; that among these, are life, liberty, and the pursuit of living within their comfort zones…”

I’m trying to remember when the term “comfort zone” and the overuse of the word “comfortable” came about. I’m also trying to remember the last time I felt I was living life within my comfort zone.  The best I can come up with to answer both questions is: “a long time ago.” Living within my comfort zone is simply not a life goal of mine; if your goals are anything like mine (maximum growth, flexibility, creativity, awe and wonder at the world we live in), then living within your comfort zone needs to completely come off your daily “must have” list.

Making Yourself a Birthday Essence At the Solar Return

As Vibration Magazine celebrates its 12th birthday this month, and as we in the northern hemisphere head into primetime as far as flower essence making is concerned, I wanted to tell you about a very special and personal vibrational essence you can make yourself each year around your birthday.

21600366.thbThe moment of your astrological birthday, called the Solar Return, results in a special chart each year. This chart shows what special opportunities and challenges you will face between this birthday and next. Many people consult astrologers for an annual update around their birthday for precisely that reason.

Your astrological birthday is not always the same as your chronological birthday but may be a day before or after. This is true for the same reason we need a leap year every four years–the true year is 365.25 days, so there is a four-year cycle in Solar Returns as well. To be technical, this moment–which we rely on astrological software to find–occurs when the Sun returns to the same zodiacal degree, minute, and second it was at your birth. Bach Essences Go Hollywood

Posted by admin on Apr 24, 2010

By Deborah Bier, PhD, Vibration Editor

Have you ever read a book, or watched a television show or movie and thought, “Wow, wasn’t THAT a Rescue Remedy moment!?” or “Wouldn’t I like to give that character some Heather!” Well, here’s your chance.

19968961.thb

We have a half-dozen very famous movie lines below, plus a Bach flower remedy that reflects a need displayed within the quote. In some cases, the remedy is obvious from the quote, and in others you have to know something about the movie to see the connection.

Can you come up with some yourself? Don’t feel you need to stay with the Bach remedies — but do include  the essence manufacturer’s name as well as the movie where the quote can be found. List your entries in comments.

“We’ll always have Paris.” Honeysuckle (Casablanca)

“I want to be alone.”  Water Violet (Grand Hotel)

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Wild Rose (Gone with the Wind)

“Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Clematis (Wizard of Oz)

“I could have been a contender!” Gentian (On the Waterfront)

“As God is my witness, I’ll never go hungry again!” Oak (Gone with the Wind)

Balancing on a Sunbeam: Sunflower Essence and Self-Confidence

One of the ways I came to know the essences in my collection in the early days was to meditate on one each night. I would put a dropperful of an essence into a glass of water, stir thoroughly, and sip it slowly while noting the thoughts or impressions that came into my mind. Read the rest of this entry »

The New Year 2010 Essence

Posted by admin on Dec 21, 2009

By Andrea Matheison, Raven Essences

Every year I make a new essence for the upcoming year, my intention being to connect with Nature and ‘capture’ the energetic impulse of the upcoming year. I’ve been making Annual Essences since 1998. Looking back over previous essences, I realize there were often prophetic elements that I could not have anticipated. These essences assist people to be conscious of what is emerging within the universe. Setting personal goals for the new year, while helping us to focus our intentions, can be short-sighted. The shifts into each new year invite us to be aware of what the universe is calling forth from within us. In a daily ritual of meditation with breath-work, using the essence allows for a deeply personal harmony between ourselves and the universal energies, the forces that intimately shape our personal and collective destiny. Flower Essences for Survivor Guilt

Posted by admin on Nov 14, 2009

From 8/24/2008 on Lila Devi’s Blog, http://www.mastersessences.com/blog

(Please note: this letter is in response to a woman with a fictitious case study assignment for a class in Chinese Herbal Therapeutics. The situation is Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome following a car accident where the patient survived but the driver, her grandfather, died.)

The subject of survivor guilt and related flower essences is an interesting one. Before recommending any flower essences or essence programs, it might help to mention some metaphysical truths. A wise person once said, “The things that happen to us do not matter; what we become through them does.” That same sage also said, “Change no circumstance of my life; change me.”

Flower Essence Story Telling

Posted by admin on Oct 3, 2009

By Deborah Bier, PhD, publisher and co-Editor of this blog

There are several different ways that people can do “flower essence readings.” These are widely varied in method — and if you or someone you know does such readings, we’d like to hear how you go about it in the comments section of this article. I’ve developed a method I refer to as “flower essence story telling.”

At the start of a session, I may or may not have heard the person’s tale — I might just do this reading “cold” without any information about their situation.  Some people would not find what I say in the essence story to be valid if I know anything their problems ahead of time… it’s a kind of test they want to put me through.  However, it’s a lot more rich if I am allowed to hear them talk about what’s going on in their lives first; we can go deeper into understanding their challenges that way.
