I have often read books about flower essences and other deep-acting
forms of vibrational therapy that left me wondering about what impact
these things had on the lives of those who had written the book. This
is in no way a criticism of the authors. When writing about such
matters, authors generally must remain impartial and objective. Books
like this are not about banner-waving or preaching a personal
message; rather, they are a rational and sober attempt to share
things that are, after much study and experimentation, considered
worth sharing, so that others may integrate them into their own lives
and hopefully benefit from them.
But at the start of a long and amazing journey such as flower
essences present to us, especially considering the stretches of
thought required in order to fully grasp such apparently radical
concepts and to unlearn much of what our conventional experience has
taught us, we need more than facts and figures and instructions. .We
need to have the feeling of support from others who have been there
before us, a sense of real human warmth, and most of all, the chance
to ask: 'What did it do for you?'
Well, it did a huge amount for me. Or should I say, has done, and is
doing a lot for me -- as I believe the process never truly ends until
we can be assured of having arrived at a permanent state of happiness
and stability, which never comes.
My first major revelation from learning about flower essences was
that I was a Wild Oat sort of person. I had drifted from thing to
thing in my life, always seeking some sort of meaning but never
finding anything that satisfied me. I had never really been able to
make much sense of the world, even felt a sense of alienation from it
at times. I had scaled the educational ladder to quite a high point,
but none of it seemed terribly valuable to me. What abilities I had
were never really utilised, and a large part of me was, in
retrospect, lying dormant.
The impact of the Bach essence Wild Oat on my psyche had a twofold
effect: first, it absolutely convinced me of the power of these
flower essences, which I so easily might never have experienced.
Second, it did what it was supposed to do and allowed me deep
insights into my role, function and path in this world. Suddenly I
felt I had an energy, a drive and a will to learn and to discover,
which I'd never had before.
I knew there was a lot more about myself that left much to be
desired. So I sought out essence after essence that I thought might
help. I probably made many errors of selection to begin with, but of
course as the essences are so gentle, never had to regret them.
Little by little, Gael and I expanded our exploration into full-blown
study and research, building on treating ourselves, our own animals
and our friends until we were treating a wide range of other people
and other animals. From the start, we were aware of the added value
of gaining results with animals, destroying as it does the tiresome
and oft-touted placebo-effect argument.
Almost from my first contact with flower essences, I knew I was going
to pursue this avenue with everything I had and make it my life. At
the same time -- never having been a very stalwart personality -- I
felt a much enhanced sense of strength to see my project through,
whatever difficulties lay in my path. I had always loved the great
outdoors, but now somehow I took heart from the knowledge that the
world of nature was all around me; at the same time I was learning
just how inextricably bound up with nature we all are. I realised one
day that my love of nature had developed into a great sense of
reverence, almost awe; and I felt moved by it (Her, if one wishes to
personify nature), in a way one is moved by a beautiful symphony or
choral work.
I had never for a single moment in my life been given
any form or religious belief; in fact I was quite scathing and
cynical about organised religion. Now, I find that I understand
clearly why people's need for worship developed out of a reverence
for the matrix of nature that created life, the earth and us. I see
great truth and value in early, pre-Christian pagan ideas.
As part of my new attitude, I stopped resenting the damp weather
quite as much! Which was useful during all the muddy, rainy outdoor
research we carried out to write out book on Bach remedies for horses.
I found myself much less scattered, doubting and nervous in the face
of stress and tests of perseverance, and this in turn had a settling
effect on my personal life. Meanwhile, our continuing study of flower
essences and the feedback we were getting from fellow enthusiasts and
those we had been able to help with their own problems all convinced
me of the enormous potential of the flower essences to bring about
real changes in people's personal relationships. It was out of this
that I decided, with priceless input and support from Gael, to work
towards this book.
It is only a very modest start, both for ourselves and for those
reading it who may wish to enter into this new world of flower
essences. But it comes to you with much love, and much hope that you
will be able to derive as much pleasure from this amazing form of
therapy as we have.
