In my astrological practice this past year or so, clients seem to be extremely anxious and fearful,
but in such an unfocused and even hysterical way that it is hard to
get at exactly what is troubling them. (I attribute this to current astrological
transits, especially Saturn in Cancer and Uranus
in Pisces.) Looking almost desperately for answers, people are projecting the
cause for their anxiety onto anything handy--astrology, numerology,
terrorist threats, the Antarctic Shelf falling off, you name it!
So many of these people complain of feeling "nervous," which is a so general a term as to be
almost meaningless as a guide in selecting remedies for them.
It could mean any number of things to different people.
It even sometimes means they are angry but that they are really
uncomfortable with anger so they convert it to something else, like anxiety,
restlessness, or sleeplessness. Or maybe they are just bored and don't cope with boredom
well, so they create some form of drama.
You'd really have to question them as to what they mean
by nervous or anxious. Under what circumstances do they typically feel nervous,
and what happens when they feel that way, e.g. how they cope, do they quit and
avoid the situation or do they go on ahead and do it despite the anxiety?
In choosing between similar remedies for the same problem, an invaluable guide
has been the Flower Essence Services Repertory. In their listings,
there are 16 remedies for Anxiety:
Aspen, Cerato, Chamomile, Chrysanthemum, Elm, Filaree, Garlic, Golden Yarrow,
Goldenrod, Larch, Mimulus, Mustard, Nicotiana, Pink MonkeyFlower, Pretty Face,
and Trumpet Vine, each for a different sort of anxiety or cause of anxiety. (You may wish to research
those essences either in the books on your shelf or by using our on-line search engine to
find articles that discuss each of them in more depth than we have room for here.)
The clinical meaning of anxiety is fear of unknown origin, an undifferentiated
unease that seems to have no external cause or referent. Bach/Healing Herb's Aspen
is for that.
When feelings are diffuse, essences by FES that can help to sort them out are
Scarlet Monkeyflower, Fuchsia, or Black-eyed Susan. If you have gone beyond anxiety to PANIC,
Rock Rose by Bach/Healing Herbs can help you calm down enough to function and to sort out
what to do about your situation. A soothing way to use your chosen remedy
mixture is to take a long hot bath, mixing a dropperful or two from the dosage bottle into the water,
along with the bath gel or aromatic oils.
I think a major cause of this
generalized fearfulness is the world situation and the rapid and troubling
political changes that we are almost helpless to do anything about. However, many of us are so overwhelmed with it
that we tend to space out and find something closer and more
manageable to fret -- or to rage -- about. It is easier to fear or hate
that neighbor who is different in some way (gay, perhaps, or
Mideastern, or obese, or a member of that odd religion) than to
confront our powerlessness against these vast political and economic
forces. One essence that helps with those kinds of fears is FES's Oregon Grape, for
social paranoia.
FES's Scotch Broom also helps with anxiety due to social hardship -- rough
economic times, for instance. Others respond to the situation by spacing out and denying that
anything is wrong by focusing on escapist activities. Those who respond this way may find
Clematis by Bach/Healing Herbs brings them awake once more.
In addition to taking essences, work on staying calm, centered, and positive, and
especially don't watch the world horrors on television for hours daily.
We can create an oasis of sanity around ourselves that will help
everyone we touch. Stay in touch with nature, be kind to yourself
and others, and pray and meditate if that is your wont.
